NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION: A CONVENIENT WAY TO LINK LAWYERS TO CLIENTS

The New York State Bar Association’s trusted Lawyer Information and Referral Service has been consistently helping match the people of new York with excellent legal services for over the last 35 years with unrivaled efficiency and perfection. Their partnership with Legal.io-  a nationwide provider of referral management technology and marketplace for the legal industry -has seen the company launch a new online portal which enables new Yorkers and people from all around the world to access 24-hour customer service.

This partnership has completely revolutionized the delivery of legal services to a larger pool of consumers in a cost effective way, and as a result, a go-to online destination for customers and enterprises seeking legal consultation regarding New York law has been established. The process of referral begins online, where an individual completes a confidential questionnaire outlining their legal problem and their location.

After the questionnaire is filled out, the state bar staff reviews the questionnaire and matches the customer with an attorney whose business premises are in the same or near the client’s residence. In case a customer resides in one of the 17 counties where a locally run referral service exists, the State then forwards the request to the respective county bar association.

What is even more enticing to clients is the fact that these referrals are free of charge. However, if the customer talks to the attorney they have been referred to, a consultation fee of up to $35 is payable. Only in cases involving, social security, personal injury, veterans and military law, medical malpractice and employee’s compensation is the individual exempted from this service charge. Following the consultation, the customer is not legally obliged to retain the lawyer they have been referred to, although this is always a choice for the customers. In case the client- attorney relationship lasts, post the consultation, attorney fees are strictly negotiated by the two parties.
